tried & Tested
Beginner Watercolour tutorials
These tutorials I completed within the first 1-2 weeks of starting out with watercolours, I have tried them out myself and found the informative and useful. I had not tried any type of painting before, and therefore these are real beginner efforts :)
I've used cheap watercolour paper, brushes and paints for affordability. It's probably detracted from the final outcome of my paintings, but I will invest the money into better supplies once I've improved my skill level.
The photos of paintings shown below are my own efforts at these watercolour tutorials.
I have no relationship with any of the listed artists.

Emma Jane Lefebvre
Watercolour Drills and Practice Strokes for Flowers
Emma demonstrates in detail how to create each petal and then put them together into flowers. After practicing the flowers, you can then follow Emma to create your own loose floral watercolour. |
Watercolour Drills and Practice Strokes for Leaves
Emma demonstrates in detail how to create different leaf styles and colouring, and then put them together into page filled with different leaves. |
ELLEN CRIMI-TRENT
Easy Watercolor Wildflower Tutorial for Beginners
This is a super fun tutorial from Ellen which involves a lot of splattering of paint - I got paint all over my computer so learn from my mistake and find a suitable area in which to splatter. I loved Ellen's easy style and attitude. |
Watercolour Floral for Beginners
In her usual fun style, Emma will help you create a floral bouquet. She starts with some practice of the different flowers, and then moves on to putting it all together. |
Allison Lyon Art
Easy Watercolour Bird
Paint along with Allison with to create this beautiful bird. Allison provides links to sketches & reference photos. I tried this tutorial in my first week of starting out with watercolours, and was very happy with the result. |
Watercolour Birds - Step by Step Tutorial
I enjoyed Allison's first watercolour bird so much, the I started on another...again Allison provides the sketches and reference photos and you paint along with her step by step. |
Charles Evans - Daler Rowney
Jay Lee
Basic Watercolour Using two Brushes
Jay Lee demonstrates this flower painting while soothing music plays, so there are no verbal instructions, just visual. |
Calligraphy by Mutka
Easy and Quick Flower Bunch
I'd like to have another go at this one as Mutka's version was so much prettier than mine. This tutorial plays mellow music while Mutka shows you how she created her (much prettier than mine) bunch of flowers. |
Jenna Rainey
The Complete Beginner's Guide to Watercolor
Jenna spends time explaining colour theory, takes you though several watercolour basics and leaf and flower practice before putting it all together into a floral wreath. I enjoyed Jenna's Style and tutorial so much that I then purchased her book "Everyday Watercolour. Learn to paint watercolour in 30 days", which I am working through. |
